Tribute to the Butterfly Pose

Today in class during our warm up we did the Butterfly Pose. I have done this pose many times and have never given it any real credit. I mean its a basic pose that relieves tension in the thighs, opens up your hips, and preps us for the hard stuff. There is nothing flashy or advanced about it. I think what makes it so fantastic is its simplistic nature. So today I am giving a tribute to the Butterfly Pose.

  • So the pose begins with you sitting on the ground with your legs out in front of you.
  • Bring your legs in, knees towards your chest, and feet together.
  • With your spine straight, expand your legs out, drawing your knees to the floor, holding your feet’s soles together and drawn into your pelvis.
  • Gently try to open your feet like a book. Do not worry if you can not do this part.
  • With your spine lengthened and pull your belly button inward.
  • Relax your body and slowly work on bending forward, and bring your torso into your legs. Keep your spine as straight as possible.
  • You can rest your hands on feet and use your arms to hold your legs down or you can extend your arms out in front of you for a deeper stretch.

I hope you enjoyed this little tribute and feel free to add your own little tips below.
