Piedmont Yoga Studio

Now in our 21st year in Oakland, the Piedmont Yoga Studio opened in 1987 through the combined efforts of Clare Finn, Richard Rosen, and Rodney Yee. We started in a small room, converted from a dress shop, and today occupy two spacious sunny rooms a few blocks away from our original location. With a staff of 27 experienced teachers, PYS offers more than 50 weekly classes, including introductory yoga classes, prenatal yoga, yoga for teens, yoga for back care, restorative yoga, yoga for seniors, yoga for special needs and people with disabilities, yoga story time for toddlers, and yoga for menopause. Many of our teachers were trained in-house in one of our advanced studies programs. Our overall approach to yoga is eclectic, drawing on elements from both traditional and modern yoga. We believe that, while yoga can be taught systematically, it cannot ultimately be contained in any one system. We encourage our teachers to express their own unique ideas and insights in their classes. All of our teachers are independent contractors, which means they work for themselves and are not employed by the studio. We also host two teacher training programs, our own 200-hour in-house program, taught by Baxter Bell, Vickie Russell Bell, Tony Briggs, Ann Dyer, Mary Paffard, and Richard Rosen; and a 200-hour accessible teacher training, a program that trains people with disabilities to teach yoga, directed by Reverend Jivana Heyman of San Francisco’s Integral Yoga Institute
