Visitors welcome! Operated by the nonprofit Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York since 1992, the Iyengar Institute of New York is a major center for the study and practice of Iyengar Yoga. Situated in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, the institute’s light-filled, loftlike studios are fully equipped with custom-made props, including benches, rope walls, and ceiling ropes, along with other props used in the practice of Iyengar Yoga. The institute offers some 70 regularly scheduled classes each week, including: introductory classes, prenatal yoga, women’s classes, restorative yoga, pranayama, classes for people living with HIV/AIDS, adaptive yoga, kids’ yoga, Sutra study, and specialty workshops with senior teachers from the international Iyengar Yoga community. The institute welcomes beginning students interested in exploring yoga. We offer introductory classes, special introductory series, and gentle classes, which are more moderately paced and less rigorous. All teachers at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York are certified in the Iyengar method. Many have decades of teaching experience. The institute’s comprehensive two-year teacher training program is open to practitioners with a regular practice and a seasoned understanding of Iyengar Yoga. The program incorporates practical philosophy, functional anatomy, psychology, learning theory, and practice teaching, and is dedicated to promoting excellence in teaching. The institute also offers ongoing continuing education for Iyengar instructors.
