How to Use the Five Elements

Our Universe as human beings is known to have five elements. We are connected to these five elements. Ayurveda describes this connection with the five elements as being medicinal. To align your being with the five elements will help you to live a balanced and healthy life. The five elements include Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. Here are five ways to connect to each of the five elements in your daily life…

  1. Earthing or grounding down into the rock beneath you. Feeling rooted into your being is the feeling of being grounded into the Earth element. Laying on the ground in Savasana or Child’s pose help to activate this grounding sensation. You can also walk barefoot on the ground and feel the Earth connecting to you.
  2. Swimming is the ultimate way to connect into the Water element. “Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” -Bruce Lee
  3. The ultimate source of fire in this Universe is our Sun. Our Sun is the creator of the Fire element. To connect with the Fire element, you want to take some time soaking up the Sun. The sun releases Vitamin D into our skin which also helps balance the nutrients in your body. Go to a beach or play a sport outside and feel the power of the Sun.
  4. We breathe in Oxygen and release Carbon Dioxide. Trees breathe Carbon Dioxide and release Oxygen. I think there is a prime example of how spending time in the woods is beneficial for both species of nature. Go hiking or camping, this is the way to connect to the Air element. Give and receive from the nature surrounding you. Also a nice way to ground yourself.
  5. Ether is all else or also known as space. Space is the entire Universe surrounding the Earth and all the elements. We can connect to the Ether element by looking at the stars at night, taking in this vast space above us. There is so much curiosity about space and the Ether element. Looking up into the star speckled dark night is your visual connection to all things in the Universe.
